In the spirit of Star Trek we will be using the command ranks, specfically those of the 24th century. These are most commonly seen in the modern series of TNG, DS9, and Voyager. I personally prefer the clear solid circles of the Commanding Officers, but even the settle lines for the Non-Commissioned Officers are still distinct. Earlier erras utilized more military like badges. Even some of the future episodes such as All Good Things in TNG made the circle blips even more pronounced.

This universe that we create will keep in line with the different categories of personnel. We will have the Commissioned Officers, also known as Line Officers, and then the Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO), also known as the Enlisted personnel. As you may have figured out generally any of the Commissioned Officers will be considered above the NCOs, due the additional training they have in both universes. There is a minor overlap because experience may allow it.
